About the Book
Last Soul is a Christian apocalyptic drama and philosophical adventure about faith, judgement, isolation, and the uncertainty of being left behind. Written more than twenty years ago and now being revisited, it follows twenty-one-year-old Mary Gilmour through a world in which people are disappearing and no one fully understands why.
The Story
The disappearances begin quietly. One person is present, and then suddenly gone. As the pattern spreads, fear overtakes communities and every explanation seems possible: disaster, judgement, salvation, or something beyond human understanding. Mary Gilmour watches the world empty around her while struggling with her own faith and the terrible possibility that whatever is happening has passed her by. Animals remain, the earth continues, and Mary must travel through the silence searching for answers before the final change arrives.

The novel is set during the unraveling of the world rather than after every mystery has been explained. Its spiritual foundation draws from Christian ideas of rapture, ascension, judgement, and moral choice, but the story remains centred on Mary's uncertain position between belief and doubt. Dolphins, dogs, cats, and other living creatures continue around her, emphasizing both the beauty of creation and the loneliness of being human in a world losing humanity.
Behind the Story
I wrote Last Soul to explore what faith looks like when certainty disappears. Rather than treating the end of the world only as spectacle, I wanted to follow one young woman through the philosophical and emotional questions beneath it: who is saved, who is judged, what makes someone good, and what happens to a person who believes she has been missed.
